How to Create DMG File On macOS

Create DMG File On macOS

Need to create a DMG file on macOS? To keep your favorite App or Document? Here we’ll show you how to do it properly.

The tool you need is the default macOS Disk Utility to create a DMG file for you to keeps your documents and files into it. Ok, here’s how to do it!

First step, create a folder for your files

First, you need to create a folder and then put all of your files, App or document into it. Name it as you like.

If your files are already inside the folder that you’ve organized, then you can just go to the next step.

Using macOS Disk Utility to create DMG file

Next step, go to Finder > Application > Utilities and open macOS Disk Utility App.

In the macOS Disk Utility App, go to File > New Image > Image from Folder. See screenshot below.

And then choose the folder of your files and documents that you want to create the DMG file of it.

A new window will pop up in the Disk Utility, right there in the Image Format settings you can choose what the format of the DMG file you want.

For a standard DMG file, you can just choose Compressed. If it for DVD or CD master, choose the DVD/CD Master format and so on. Also, choose Where the DMG file you want to save. In this demo, I choose to save it on Desktop. See screenshot below.

Click the Save button to start creating a DMG file with Disk Utility. Depend on the size of your files if the size is not too big then it should be done quickly.

To finish the operation, click the Done button. And you are done 🙂

Advance macOS DMG (Image) file creation

For advance purposes, if you need to create a DMG file with the specifics Disk format, like Mac OS Extended Journaled, APFS, etc.

To do that, in the macOS Disk Utility go to File > New Disk Image > and select Blank Image instead of creating the Image from Folder.

You can set the size of the blank image you like. For example, if your document is 200 MB in size then the image size should have an empty space at least 5 MB. So the Blank Image should 205 MB in size. You got the idea right?!

Below is the screenshot example of how to create an advance macOS DMG file.

So for the final step, what you need is just to copy and paste your document into this (DMG) Blank Image.

Hot Tips! If you want to customize the disk icon, the Finder background color, etc you can use App like DMG Canvas by Araelium.
