Hackintosh Direct Upgrade From macOS Sierra to High Sierra

Hackintosh Direct Upgrade to High Sierra

On 25 September 2017 is the day of Apple releases the final version of macOS High Sierra after a few times of beta released of course, and the day is today when I write this post. And maybe just like all of you Hackintosher! I really excited too!

And yeah after the update released, I download the installer from App Store in the morning I wake up from sleep and just can’t wait to try it on my low budget Hackintosh PC.

But this time I don’t create a bootable USB drive to install the OS, this time is different.

This time I do the direct upgrade from existing installed macOS Sierra on my machine.

In this post, I want to share my experience with you guys how to direct upgrade macOS Sierra to High Sierra.

Is there a problem?

Yeah there is a little problem. But it fixed anyway.

Is it okay to upgrade if you have Windows OS installed on the same drive?

Yeah it’s Okay!

Can it installed on Core2 duo ( Low budget PC) ??

Yeah it can!

If you wanna know my hackintosh PC spec is:

Proc : 3,17 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics card (VGA): NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT 512 MB

Memory : 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

HDD : 160,04 GB SAMSUNG HD160JJ (SATA)

Screenshot:

So! by posting this,  I hope you guys can upgrade your Hackintosh to the latest version of macOS. In this case, is High Sierra without fear of ruining your Hackintosh.

But of course be wise for safe, always back up your data first. We never know, sometimes PC goes weird.

[Important!] This is for a vanilla hackintosh only! don’t do this if you are using hackintosh distro it won’t work. If you want, you can read the guide on how to make Vanilla Hackintosh from Windows and from Mac OS

To make it from Windows here: How to Make Hackintosh Bootable USB Drive From Windows

Mac / Hackintosh here: How to Make Mac OS Sierra Bootable Usb Drive With Disk Utility

Okay! let’s back to the point.

This is what you can do to Hackintosh Direct Upgrade From macOS Sierra to High Sierra (10.13.) smoothly

#1. Just in case! please first back up your important data on drive where macOS installed.

#2. Download the OS (High Sierra) from the App Store. After finish downloading, the installer will automatically open so close it!

#3. Download the latest version of Clover boot loader from Source Forge [If you have the version of Clover_v2.4k_r4114 installed on your EFI partition I think it’s fine]

#4. And If you have any additional kext like VoodooHDA etc installed on SLE (System Library Extension) delete it from there! [You may need to backup it before delete it.]

This additional kext what caused the OS could not boot during or after the upgrade process.

#5. After done, with all these step, open the macOS High Sierra Installer App on Application folder. This time click ‘Continue’ bla bla bla.

#6. Your PC will restart several times during the process. And if everything working as it should, then it should be easy.

Trouble shoot High Sierra can’t boot

Just in case your hack failed to boot after upgrading, try to boot in safe mode.

This what happen to me because I forgot to delete VoodooHDA kext from S/L/E. ?

This problem solved by booting in safe mode and then I delete the kext file and after reboot and boot normally I install again the VoodooHDA kext.

One more, make sure connect your PC to the internet using Ethernet port during the upgrade.

You can read my post for how to enable sound in Hackintosh with VoodoHDA here How to Enable Sound in Hackintosh

If you want to create macOS Sierra bootable USB drive using Vanilla method from Windows and then upgrade it to High Sierra, you can follow the guide here How to Make Hackintosh Bootable USB Drive From Windows

To create bootable USB drive from existing Hackintosh or real Mac here How to Make Mac OS Sierra Bootable Usb Drive With Disk Utility /Terminal

Just another closing words

This is what I’ve done to upgrade my Hackintosh to macOS High Sierra. It works just smooth as usual.

And yeah! I am happy ?

Okay! I hope this post can help you to go direct upgrade your Hackintosh just like I did rather than install it from the bootable USB drive. It saves times, and yeah just to let you know it won’t work anymore since on High Sierra Apple change the Installer files structure.

Please don’t feel hesitate if you wanna ask a question or just want to discuss it with me by leaving your comment below.

If you found this short post useful you can share it on facebook or twitter.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Cheers!

P.S. Below you can watch a short video documentation how I upgrade my Hackintosh from Sierra to High Sierra

    Hi.
    Thank you very much.
You wrote: #3. Download the latest version of Clover boot loader from Source Forge [ If you have version of Clover_v2.4k_r4114 installed on your EFI partition I think it’s fine]
But you didn’t say what to do with it after I download it. Where do I put it? How?
    Thanks!

      Hi Eli,
      You’re welcome.
just to make sure, because most of people still misunderstood between real Apple Mac and hackintosh stuff.

If you want to upgrade your Apple Mac computer you don’t need to install Clover. Just backup your data using Time Machine and then just install macOS High Sierra app. For more info you can visit https://support.apple.com/macos/high-sierra

But if your computer is hackintosh PC you need to reinstall Clover in EFI partition to upgrade it, you can read my post about how to install clover here https://digimanx.com/hackintosh-post-installation-and-bios-setup/ scroll down to find it in ‘Post installation with Clover’ section.

Hope this help and thanks for visiting my blog ?

      Hi! You’re welcome mate.

Yeah I forgot to mention about that, for more efficient you can also put it on ‘Other folder’ anyway.

BTW Thanks for sharing your experience here, really appreciate it 🙂
