The cool thing of using self hosted WordPress as your blogging platform is you can still rock’n roll even if you are using a free default themes.
Like Twenty seventeen theme for example. Yeah! Twenty Seventeen is most used default theme out there.
You can freely modify the theme appearance by get your hand a little dirty with a basic or advanced coding stuff.

Now, it’s easy for us to create a custom child theme, and learn to developing it for your site appearance and customization that you like.
In this post I’ve made a list of plugin that you can use to work with. But it’s better to understand why you have to make and use a child theme instead of the parent themes.
Why we have to create child theme and why not just using the parent instead?
Child theme are strongly recommended way to modify WordPress theme without touching the existing parent theme.
- By using child theme will avoid all change we have made lost if we upgrading the parent theme.
- It’s a great way for beginner like us to learn about WordPress theme development and it also made you easy to work with it.
- And of course it will make work more fast for advanced WordPress theme developer.
- Some things cannot be changed using only the Customizer.

Me.. is using Child Theme Configurator by Lilaea Media. I use this plugin to learn about WordPress theme development stuff.
I prefer using a software like MAMP and work with it on my computer local server while offline, mostly offline.
To do that, first i download the plugin and the theme that needed, and then I work offline using MAMP. I’ve made a post about how to use MAMP on local server, you can read here.
If you want to install the plugin while you are online and do it live on your WordPress site, in WP admin page you can easily go to > Left panel > Plugins > Add New and find those plugin from there.

By the way I use a premium theme which is Genesis Framework by Studiopress for this blog. Its really cool premium WordPress theme that build in framework. And you can do whatever you want with the sample theme.
